My dad kept his hunting maps in an old cedar box. When I was very little, him and I would sit on the floor around the box–he’d point to a spot on a map. I’d nod enthusiastically, excited for the next opportunity to be a pink snowsuit in a sea of camouflage. It never occurred to either of us that the pink snowsuit made me the hunted. When my dad died, I found the box hidden in the back corner under a staircase in his basement. The box ultimately taught me why my dad had died tragically young and lead me to teaching United States Marines how to be braver, stronger.
